ABBA
[AB ah] (father)-- an Aramaic word which corresponds to our
"Daddy" or "Papa." It is found three times in the
New Testament: in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed, "Abba,
Father" <Mark 14:36>; the apostle Paul linked the Christian's
cry of "Abba, Father" with the "Spirit of adoption"
<Rom. 8:15>; and, again, Paul writes, "Because you are sons,
God has sent forth the Spirit of His son into your hearts, crying out,
'Abba, Father!'" <Gal. 4:6>. What a blessed privilege it is
to be given the right to call the great Creator, "Our Father"!
Hallowed
Holy
(HOLINESS, CEREMONIAL)
A characteristic of the worship system of ancient Israel, which required
that a person be ceremonially clean and pure before he could approach
God. Many acts prohibited in Old Testament law were not immoral but they
were considered ceremonially unclean. Ceremonial uncleanness resulted
from eating forbidden foods or from contact with unclean objects such as
a leper or a dead body <Lev. 11:24-47>. Priests especially were
restricted as to what they could handle or do <Leviticus 21>.
