Once Saved, Always Saved

(After reading below, click on Layman's Remarks on Left)

A. It is a birth from above.
John 3:3 HCSB Jesus replied, "I assure you: Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
  1. The Spiritual Birth is compared with the Physical Birth.

John 3:6 HCSB Whatever is born of the flesh is flesh, and whatever is born of the Spirit is spirit.
(How can one be "unborn" physically or spiritually?)

  2. By this birth, one becomes a son (child) of God

John 1:11-13 HCSB He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him. But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.
(Joint heirs with Jesus our Elder Brother)

1John 3:2 HCSB Dear friends, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him because we will see Him as He is.

  3. Circumcision attends this birth from above.
Colossians 2:10-11 HCSB and you have been filled by Him, who is the head over every ruler and authority. You were also circumcised in Him with a circumcision not done with hands, by putting off the body of flesh, in the circumcision of the Messiah.
B.   The name of the born again one is written in the Lamb's Book of Life.
C.   Promises concerning Personal Salvation
  1.

John 10:27-28 HCSB My sheep hear My voice, I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish--ever! No one will snatch them out of My hand.("Never" is meaning never, never, never, never, never ...)

  2. Philippians 1:6 HCSB I am sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
  3. Jude 1:24-25 HCSB Now to Him who is able to protect you from stumbling and to make you stand in the presence of His glory, blameless and with great joy...
  4. 2Timothy 1:12 HCSB ... I know the One I have believed in and am persuaded that He is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day.
  5. John 18:9 HCSB This was to fulfill the words He had said: "I have not lost one of those You have given Me."
  6. Romans 8:38-39 HCSB For I am persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, hostile powers, height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!
  7. See also: 1 Peter 1:5; Galatians 3:1-3; Galatians 3:10-11; Galatians 3:19-25, 29; Galatians 4:1-7; Galatians 4:19-5:1; Galatians 5:16-18; Ephesians 1:7-14; Ephesians 2:1-10; Colossians 2:9-14; Colossians 3:1-4
Questions raised by those
not believing in once saved,
always saved
A.   Judas - Although Judas was one of the twelve disciples, Jesus made it clear that Judas was not a believer.
  1. John 6:70 HCSB Jesus replied to them, "Didn't I choose you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is the Devil!"
  2. John 17:12 HCSB "While I was with them, I was protecting them by Your name that You have given Me. I guarded them and not one of them is lost, except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture may be fulfilled."
B.   Peter - He denied Jesus three times. There is no hint in scripture that he lost his salvation.
C.   Matthew 10:22 HCSB ...But the one who endures to the end will be delivered. (Context concerns saved from persecutions, not saved in the sense of personal salvation.)
Matthew 24:9-14 HCSB "Then they will hand you over for persecution, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of My name. Then many will take offense, betray one another and hate one another. Many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. Because lawlessness will multiply, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be delivered. This good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed in all the world as a testimony to all nations. And then the end will come." (Tribulation)
D.   Hebrews 6:4-6 HCSB "For it is impossible to renew to repentance those who were once enlightened, who tasted the heavenly gift, became companions with the Holy Spirit, tasted God's good word and the powers of the coming age, and who have fallen away, because, to their own harm, they are recrucifying the Son of God and holding Him up to contempt."
  1. If "being enlightened, etc." means "being saved," then if one could fall away, he could never be saved again, and I have never heard anyone agree to that.
  2. If "being enlightened, etc." means moved by the Holy Spirit to the blazing light of Calvary, but turning away finally from God, then this one cannot ever be saved.
E.   John 15:6 HCSB "If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers..." (Our Lord in the plainest manner intimates that a person may as truly be united to him as the branch is to the tree that produces it, and yet be afterwards cut off and cast into the fire; because he has not brought forth fruit to the glory of his God. No man can cut off a branch from a tree to which that branch was never united: it is absurd, and contrary to the letter and spirit of the metaphor, to talk of being seemingly in Christ - because this means nothing.)
F.   Galatians 5:4 HCSB "You who are trying to be justified by the law are alienated from Christ; you have fallen from grace." (Paul simply says you are fallen away from grace. If you demand physical circumcision for salvation, then you are going the law route - not grace.)
